The Jeep 4xe products pair an internal combustion engine that runs on gasoline with a battery and electric drive motor to create a seamless and efficient driving experience. These powertrains are called PHEVs, partial hybrid electric vehicles. The batteries in the 4xe products are large enough to be charged at home or in public and can power the vehicle on all-electric power for a silent and smooth driving experience.
The Wrangler 4xe features an impressive 375 horsepower and 470 lb.-ft. of torque. It can also rocket the Wrangler from 0-60 mph in just six seconds. The EPA estimates the Wrangler 4xe achieves 49 MPGe and can travel up to 370 miles of total driving range. There are several different driving modes available: Hybrid, Electric, and E-Save.
The default mode, Hybrid, combines torque from both the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine and the electric motors. This combination provides maximum horsepower, instant torque, and the best acceleration. Electric power is consumed first.
When the battery has more than a one percent charge, it can run in Electric Mode. This allows for nearly zero tailpipe emissions up to highway speeds. The vehicle can run in this mode for up to 21 miles.
E-Save Mode prioritizes the 2.0-liter gas engine. This saves the battery charge for later use. When power demand is low, the engine shuts off. It can also be reconfigured to increase the battery charge as well.
Releasing in 2022, the all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee will also feature a 4xe variant. Jeep plans to build several more models to feature a 4xe powertrain including the Compass and more.
